As a writer, the freedom of speech is something that I hold dear. It’s a right, not a privilege like a driver’s license. A driver’s license can be revoked if abused, whereas the freedom of speech even pertains to prisoners. So, it really shakes me to the core when I hear that people disrespect this right. There are so many corporations and individuals out there that infringe upon this freedom that you can’t be too aggressive in protecting yourself.
Be honest with yourself and you’ll find that there have been several instances in which this, or another right, has been ignored. Most common is the federal law that protects the forty hour work week. The truth is we’ve all been approached by a boss or supervisor at some point or another and been told that we have to work overtime. The truth is these people more often than not get full of themselves and forget or don’t care that a federal law protects the right to go home after forty hours. Read more: Phoenix New Time
You can say no if you want to. But, most people will roll over and work the overtime due to the fear of disciplinary action. The company you work for can’t actually fire you or take any action against you for not working overtime, and if they do, you’ll have a hefty, profitable lawsuit in your favor in the future.
Beyond the fact that you should stand up for your own rights, there are many organizations out there dedicated to helping those that have been wronged. According to the Constitution, every American Citizen is entitled to certain rights. These organizations defend these rights to the ends of the earth and are dedicated to serving justice. Here is some information about one such organization.
American Civil Liberties Union
The American Civil Liberties Union is a non-profit organization dedicated to defending the rights of every United States citizen established by the Constitution. These rights are definite and highly defendable in court. The organization was established in 1920 and is still going strong today, defending those who would otherwise not have a voice.
Larkin and Lacey
To drive home the point that defending your constitutional rights is not only important but can be rewarded we have the Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund.
See, Michael and Jim were two journalists who founded a paper in their small town. They spoke the truth because that’s what their job was. However, something happened in 2007 that shook their whole world.
They found that grand jury proceedings were taking place that requested notes from authors on articles regarding the sheriff. So they did what any journalist would do. They covered the story.
The sheriff didn’t take too kindly to this and arrested them. Lacey and Larkin were taken from their homes in the middle of the night and imprisoned for their creative work. They were not threatening the sheriff, nor were they falsely accusing him of anything. Yet, there they were in a dank cell in the county jail simply for speaking their minds. This didn’t discourage them, though. After Michael and Jim were released, they sued the county and won $3.75 million. They didn’t stop there. The funds from the case were used to start the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund. Now, they dedicate their time to helping others that have been wronged like they were.
