America has always been seen as a big melting pot, especially in major cities like New York. To young Doe Deere from her native Russia, it was a chance of making dreams come true. She, her sister and mother took a leap of faith and moved from Izhevsk to the bustling metropolis 20 years ago.
The three brave immigrants found NYC larger than life, very expensive and extremely competitive, but they all got several jobs to stay afloat for a while.
Unfortunately, the family trio ended up in a Manhattan homeless shelter on Lexington Avenue. They never gave up, pushed full steam ahead and got a lucky break in 1999 when they met a wonderful social worker who connected them to an organization that assisted immigrant women, “Sanctuary for Families.”
After that, things were looking up, and Doe Deere found her entrepreneurial spirit ready to engage. By 2008, the creative, fashionable and artistic lady took her business skills and launched her own online makeup company called “Lime Crime.”
It was a very bold move that consisted of very bold cosmetics. The major beauty companies kept to their beige-y uniform-like palettes, but Doe Deere found a clever niche. Bright and colorful makeup for young people was her mission, and little by little, the company gained a major following on social media.
Doe Deere became an entrepreneurial darling, posing on business magazine covers, offering advice to young business owners and employing up to 35 people at the company’s Los Angeles headquarters.
As an immigrant, she was proud of her strong work ethic, her belief in the American dream and her value to the movement of America.
Doe Deere sold Lime Crime last summer and is embarking on a new brand called “Poppyangeloff,” a fashion/jewelry business.
She is excellent at spotting street trends and deciding what pop culture is into at the moment. She is fearless when it comes to launching fabulous new business ventures.
Doe Deere believed in America from the beginning.
“I idealized the United States as the place where anything is possible.”
She’s a rising star to keep watching.
